In 1683, four Sheppard brothers (Thomas, James, David, and John) moved to Back Neck, New Jersey and began their own vegetable farm. Since then, farming has become a family tradition for generations of Sheppards. The family began farming at their current location on Sayres Neck Road is Cedarville, NJ in 1888. Today, Sheppard Farms Inc. (better known as Eastern Fresh) has expanded into a 1,500 acre farm with upwards of 160 workers during peak season. Eastern Fresh Growers was incorporated in 1984 and now employs, 100 workers during peak season.
